  • In the previous lecture, we witnessed the brilliant breakthrough of algebra during the Renaissance—cubic and quartic equations were successfully solved, reaching their peak in Galois’s group theory. This marked algebra’s maturity as a powerful symbolic language and computational tool.

  • What happens when this powerful algebraic force meets the ancient Greeks’ geometric tradition, built on intuition and axioms? The answer is a discipline that completely transformed mathematics—Analytic Geometry.

  • Its birth marks a profound paradigm shift in mathematical history. Before this, mathematicians (like the ancient Greeks) often “used geometry to solve algebra,” such as solving equations through geometric construction. Starting from the 17th century, mathematicians like Fermat and Descartes opened a new era—using algebra to study geometry.

The Core Idea: A Revolution from Figures to Equations

Analytic geometry’s core idea: building an “algebraic coordinate system” for the geometric world.

  • Two Pillars:

    1. Coordinates: Using ordered number pairs (x,y)(x, y) to uniquely mark every point on a plane.
    2. Equations: Using an algebraic equation to describe a set of points with common characteristics—a curve or line.
  • Perspective Inversion: A fundamental transformation.

    • Ancient Greek Perspective: Curves are primary, geometric constructions’ products. Equation f(x,y)=0f(x, y) = 0 is merely a “property” the curve satisfies.
    • Analytic Geometry Perspective: Equations are primary, the definers. Curves are sets of all points satisfying the equation—the equation’s “graphical incarnation.”
  • Two Founders: Around 1630, French mathematicians Pierre de Fermat and René Descartes independently established this new discipline’s foundation. Both realized any geometric problem could be translated into algebraic language, then solved through algebraic operations, making many originally ingenious geometric puzzles into routine algebraic calculations.

A New Order for Curves: Classification by “Degree”

Analytic geometry provides a powerful principle for classifying infinitely diverse curves—by their algebraic equation’s degree. These curves are called algebraic curves.

  • Degree 1 curves: Equations like ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0 represent lines.

  • Degree 2 curves: Equations like ax2+bxy+cy2+dx+ey+f=0ax^2 + bxy + cy^2 + dx + ey + f = 0. Fermat and Descartes’s major discovery: all degree 2 curves are conic sections (ellipse, parabola, hyperbola) or their degenerate forms. This greatly unified conic section studies since Apollonius.

Singularities and Newton’s Classification

  • Analytic geometry’s first “new continent” was cubic curves. Slightly more complex algebraically, their geometric forms become extraordinarily rich. Unlike degree 2 curves’ smooth appearances, degree 3 curves can have special singular points where the curve is no longer “smooth.”

    • Node: Curve crosses itself, forming an intersection. For example, “Descartes’ folium” x3+y33axy=0x^3 + y^3 - 3axy = 0 has a node at the origin.
    • Cusp: Curve suddenly turns here, forming a sharp corner. For example, y2=x3y^2 = x^3 has a cusp at the origin.
  • Facing this seemingly chaotic “curve zoo,” Newton used analytic geometry’s power to undertake an unprecedented grand work: classifying all cubic curves. He found any cubic equation could be transformed into simpler standard forms through coordinate changes, finally listing 72 different forms.

  • More importantly, Newton proposed a profound insight: these 72 different curves might all be 5 basic projective forms projected at different angles. This is algebraic geometry’s core idea—seeing through myriad “shadows” (specific shapes) to understand the unique “essence” (algebraic structure).

Beyond Algebra: Transcendental Curves and the Calculus of Variations

  • Analytic geometry classifies curves by algebraic equations’ degrees, but this cannot encompass all curves in the universe. Many important curves cannot be described by any polynomial equation P(x,y)=0P(x,y)=0. These are called transcendental curves.

  • Catenary: A uniform chain or rope, naturally drooping when both ends are fixed. It looks like a parabola, but isn’t. Its equation is based on a transcendental function—hyperbolic cosine: y=acosh(x/a)=a2(ex/a+ex/a)y = a \cosh(x/a) = \frac{a}{2}(e^{x/a} + e^{-x/a}).

  • Cycloid: A circle rolling on a straight line, a fixed point on its circumference traces this path. It’s described by trigonometric parametric equations: x=a(tsint),y=a(1cost)x=a(t-\sin t), y=a(1-\cos t). The cycloid has many amazing physical properties, called “Helen of geometry.”

The Brachistochrone Problem: Birth of an Intellectual Duel

  • In 1696, Swiss mathematician Johann Bernoulli issued a public challenge to “the greatest mathematicians in Europe.” This was the Brachistochrone Problem.

  • Question: Under gravity, a particle slides frictionlessly from point A to point B not directly below it—what path takes the shortest time?

  • This wasn’t just a math puzzle, but a “declaration of war.” Bernoulli gave 6 months to solve, testing his era’s greatest minds, especially his rival-friend Newton and Leibniz.

  • The climax is dramatic: Newton, over 50, serving as Master of the Royal Mint, busy with affairs. He received the problem one afternoon, studied after dinner, solved it in one evening, anonymously sending his answer the next day.

  • Though anonymous, Bernoulli recognized the author immediately, leaving a famous quote: “tanquam ex ungue leonem”—“I recognize the lion from his claw.” Newton’s unbeatable physical intuition and mathematical power, like lion claws, couldn’t be disguised. Finally, Newton, Leibniz, L’Hôpital, and the Bernoulli brothers (Johann and Jacob) all solved this problem.

A New Mathematics: The Calculus of Variations

  • The brachistochrone problem’s importance: it cannot be solved by traditional calculus. Traditional calculus finds a function’s extrema (one or more numbers). Here, we seek an unknown function (the path itself) minimizing an integral depending on this function (total time).

  • This “function of functions” is called a functional. For example, the arc length of all possible curves connecting two points is a functional—input is a curve y(x)y(x), output is a number (the curve’s length). Our goal is finding the input function minimizing this functional.

  • To solve such problems, Euler and Lagrange systematically developed Calculus of Variations. Its core tool is the Euler-Lagrange equation. For functional J[y]=abF(x,y,y)dxJ[y] = \int_{a}^{b} F(x, y, y') dx seeking extrema, any extremizing function y(x)y(x) must satisfy:

  • This equation is the calculus of variations’ cornerstone. In physics, it equals F=maF=ma‘s status in mechanics. It transforms a global optimization problem—“finding the optimal path among infinite possibilities”—into a solvable local differential equation.

  • Step 1: Build the time functional. Express total time as an integral depending on path y(x)y(x).

    • By energy conservation, velocity vv at vertical distance yy: 12mv2=mgy\frac{1}{2}mv^2 = mgy, so v=2gyv = \sqrt{2gy} (starting from rest at y=0y=0, y-axis downward).

    • Small arc length: ds=dx2+dy2=1+(y)2dxds = \sqrt{dx^2 + dy^2} = \sqrt{1 + (y')^2}dx.

    • Time through this segment: dt=ds/vdt = ds/v.

    • Total time TT integrates all small time segments—a functional T[y]T[y]:

      T[y]=ABdt=xAxB1+(y)22gydxT[y] = \int_{A}^{B} dt = \int_{x_A}^{x_B} \frac{\sqrt{1+(y')^2}}{\sqrt{2gy}} dx

  • Step 2: Apply Euler-Lagrange equation.

    • Integrand: F(y,y)=1+(y)22gyF(y, y') = \frac{\sqrt{1+(y')^2}}{\sqrt{2gy}}. Note FF doesn’t explicitly contain variable xx.

    • In this case, Euler-Lagrange equation has a simplified first integral—Beltrami Identity: FyFy=CF - y' \frac{\partial F}{\partial y'} = C (constant).

    • Calculating Fy\frac{\partial F}{\partial y'} and substituting, after algebraic simplification, yields a differential equation for yy and yy':

      y(1+(y)2)=12gC2=constanty(1 + (y')^2) = \frac{1}{2gC^2} = \text{constant}

  • Step 3: Solve the differential equation.

    • Rearranging: y=kyyy' = \sqrt{\frac{k-y}{y}} (new constant kk). This is a first-order nonlinear differential equation.

    • Solution via parameter substitution (let y=ksin2(θ/2)y = k \sin^2(\theta/2)) yields exactly the cycloid’s parametric equations:

      x=a(tsint)x = a(t - \sin t) y=a(1cost)y = a(1 - \cos t)

    • This eloquently proves: the “fastest” path minimizing time is this beautiful cycloid traced by a rolling wheel.

A Unification of Physics: Lagrangian Mechanics

  • Calculus of variations’ power extends far beyond the brachistochrone problem. French mathematician Lagrange realized the entire Newtonian mechanics system could be derived from a single variational principle—Principle of Least Action.

  • Lagrangian: He defined a quantity L=TV\mathcal{L} = T - V, where TT is the system’s total kinetic energy, VV is total potential energy. This is called the “Lagrangian.”

  • Action: The true physical path from one state to another is the one making the “action” functional S=LdtS = \int \mathcal{L} dt reach an extremum (usually minimum).

  • Physics’ “optimal” path: Substituting L\mathcal{L} into the Euler-Lagrange equation yields equations of motion—exactly Newton’s laws!

  • This perspective is revolutionary. It unifies physical laws from a series of independent equations (for springs, gravity, etc.) into an elegant, universal optimization problem: “Nature always chooses the most ‘economical’ path.” This thought became modern physics’ foundation (including quantum field theory and string theory).

  1. Perspective transformation:

    • What’s the fundamental difference between ancient Greek mathematicians and Descartes in viewing the relationship between “equations” and “curves”? Which perspective was more revolutionary at that time? Why?
  2. Power of unification:

    • How does analytic geometry unify ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola—three seemingly different curves—under “conic sections” through a single degree 2 equation? What advantage does this show of algebraic methods?
  3. Birth of new calculus:

    • Ordinary calculus problems, like finding f(x)=(x1)2+2f(x)=-(x-1)^2+2‘s maximum—we seek a point xx.
    • The brachistochrone problem—we seek an unknown path y(x)y(x).
    • In your own words, describe the essential difference in “what’s being sought” between these two types. Why does the latter need a “new calculus” (calculus of variations)?
  4. From “laws” to “principles”:

    • Newton’s laws (F=maF=ma) tell us force on an object now determines its acceleration now. This is “local,” instantaneous causality.
    • Lagrange’s least action principle says a object’s complete trajectory between time t1t_1 and t2t_2 is the one minimizing the “action” integral among all possible paths. This is a “global” optimization perspective.
    • How do you understand the difference between these two ways of describing the physical world? Viewing physical laws as solutions to an “optimization problem”—what inspiration does this give for understanding “natural laws”?
